The many benefits of matcha

Matcha tea, a true gem of Japanese culture, is gaining popularity worldwide. Thanks to its powerful antioxidants, it is known for its multiple health benefits. In addition to its wellness properties, the ritual of preparation offers a serene moment of relaxation.

The Origin of Matcha

Matcha originates from Japan, though its history dates back to China’s Tang Dynasty (7th to 10th centuries). At that time, tea leaves were ground into bricks for easier transportation. Japanese Buddhist monks, fascinated by this powdered tea, brought it to Japan in the 12th century, incorporating it into their meditation rituals. Soon after, matcha became central to the Japanese tea ceremony (“chanoyu”), symbolizing harmony, respect, and tranquility, values deeply rooted in traditional Japanese culture.

The Benefits of Matcha

Matcha tea is especially rich in antioxidants, particularly catechins and EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which help combat free radicals and prevent cellular aging. These antioxidants are also known for their anti-inflammatory properties, helping to reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Additionally, matcha promotes better concentration and relaxation due to the presence of L-theanine, a unique amino acid.

Other benefits of matcha include:

  1. Energy Boost: Its caffeine content releases energy more gradually than coffee, avoiding sudden energy spikes.
  2. Natural Detoxifier: Matcha helps eliminate toxins thanks to its chlorophyll content.
  3. Metabolism Support: It aids in more efficient fat burning, supporting weight loss.
  4. Immune System Enhancement: Its rich antioxidant profile strengthens the immune system.
  5. Heart Health: Regular matcha consumption may lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
  6. Pro-Aging Effect: Its antioxidants reduce skin aging signs, bringing radiance and suppleness.

How to Prepare Matcha

The ritual of preparing matcha is an art in itself. To achieve a perfect matcha, it’s recommended to use a bamboo whisk, called “chasen,” and a traditional bowl, the “chawan.” Here are the essential steps to prepare matcha tea:

  1. Measure and Sift the Matcha: Use about 1g of matcha and sift it to avoid clumps and obtain a fine powder.
  2. Add Hot Water: Use water at around 70-80°C to preserve the matcha’s benefits without burning it.
  3. Vigorously Whisk: Using the chasen, whisk the matcha in “M” movements to create a light and frothy foam on the tea’s surface. If you don’t have a whisk, you can use a small electric whisk or a blender.

There are two main matcha preparations: usucha, a lighter version, and koicha, a thicker and more concentrated version. Depending on your preferences, you can adjust the amount of matcha powder and water.
