Beauty interview with Sophie Dherbecourt : “I believe that Beauty saves us every day”

Through her paintings with evocative titles such as “Boy’s don’t cry”, “Naked”, “Heartbreaker”, Sophie Dherbecourt tries with her Art to touch the Beautiful as closely as possible, by the forms, the colours, the intentions she transmits to us. Both daring and inspired, she picks up Beauty everywhere, as she perceives it, with finesse and elegance. A spiritual and artistic flight that transports us, too.

It was at the Francis Bacon exhibition, at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His entire definition of Beauty had a really positive effect on me, despite the violence of his work.

When I bring together the right colors and create the right compositions, I feel that I’m creating objects that bring more Beauty to this world.

I think of John Keats and these words of his, which have always echoed with me: “A thing of beauty is a joy for ever.” Then I think of the film [Bright Star, about Keats] by Jane Campion.

I believe that Beauty saves us every day, in the sense that it brings happiness and lifts the spirits. It’s something that we really do need, every day, to transport the imagination.

I grew up in the north of France, and so the first time I saw the colors and the light of the south of France, as a little girl, it was really quite astounding. I was in awe. It has completely changed my way of working with colors.

For me, Beauty is hidden absolutely everywhere, and especially in the little details. That’s why I think it’s important to remain open and attentive to everything around us, as Beauty will always be there, somewhere.

I remind myself quite often to be patient with myself. Above all, I would say that Beauty isn’t necessarily in what you are, but in what you do.

For me, the feeling of Beauty is indescribable. As Serge Lutens once said, we can’t describe Beauty, otherwise it escapes us…
