Why use organic makeup?

If you take a closer look at the labels on conventional makeup products, you’ll find several synthetic ingredients that are bad for your skin and health. Many have even been identified as endocrine disruptors. These include: 

Chemical colorants are frequently used in makeup products to give the desired shade to a face powder or eyeshadow, for example. Unfortunately, they’ve also been shown to be involved in allergic reactions, are suspected of being carcinogenic, and may have negative effects on the human reproductive system. Look for natural, plant-derived colorants, such as natural pigments, which are very gentle on the skin.

Silicones are plastic materials that can be found in many cosmetic and makeup products, and particularly in primers or foundations. While they do make a texture smoother and help it to glide over the skin better, they also have many negative points. In addition to being very polluting, silicones form an occlusive film on the skin. On the face of it, this gives the skin a smooth appearance, but in reality, it prevents the skin from being able to “breathe” properly and causes the condition of your skin to deteriorate over time. Silicones don’t provide a single nutrient that the skin needs to function properly, plus they prevent it from eliminating toxins and waste correctly. 

Allergenic, carcinogenic, mutagenic… There’s a lot of controversy about conventional preservatives. These include the famous parabens, which are classified as endocrine disruptors. While it’s essential to use preservatives in makeup products to prevent the growth of bacteria and stop them from “going off” over time, you’d do better to look for 100% natural preservatives, which are also very effective but carry fewer health risks.

Many mineral oils and other petrochemical derivatives can be found in foundations, lipsticks, mascaras, etc. Mineral oils are not eco-friendly at all. Plus, just like silicones, they have no benefits for the skin and actually deprive it of nutrients. Their occlusive properties can also make them comedogenic (pore-clogging), leading to spots and blackheads after just a few days of use. 

Did you know that lots of lipsticks contain lead? Even if it’s only a tiny amount, this lead is absorbed by the body every time the lipstick is applied. So obviously, if you can avoid it, it’s much better!

Synthetic fragrances can be found in many conventional makeup products. These can trigger allergic reactions, and usually contain phthalates – powerful endocrine disruptors. 

The list goes on… But by now, you’ve probably understood that behind all those glamorous makeup products in major retailers are many substances that are harmful to your health and the environment, and are far from being 100% skin-friendly!

All these cosmetic ingredients have been identified as either harmful or potentially harmful to health. So it’s not surprising that regulations have been established to set maximum limits for some of them when used in cosmetic and makeup products. However, when a single conventional makeup product contains several of these harmful substances (silicones, preservatives, mineral oils, synthetic colorants, etc.), plus you use several conventional makeup products on your face every day, this leads to what’s known as the “cocktail effect.” Time also plays a not-insignificant role in this process. If you regularly use conventional makeup products containing ingredients that are potentially harmful to health, these ingredients will gradually build up in your body and can end up causing damage.

Damage is therefore caused by both the amount of products applied and how long they are used for. The planet, too, is subject to the “cocktail effect” and “time effect,” as the polluting substances build up in the environment without breaking down. If you want to avoid these ticking bombs, switch to natural and organic makeup. It’s safe for your body – and for the planet!
