The adaptogens at Absolution

Since 2009, Absolution offers a different vision of Beauty. A Beauty where ecology, effectiveness and sensoriality blend together, and where each product is meticulously formulated to gradually restore your skin’s balance and bring back its original beauty.

Isabelle Carron is passionate about plants and their properties, and she finds inspiration in Nature to create skincare products that are equally effective and good for your skin, your health, and the environment. In this botanical realm, which is incredibly generous, adaptogenic plants have long been recognized— in the West, mostly as dietary supplements, but they also boast unsuspected benefits for the skin!

What is an adaptogen?

Adaptogens are herbs, roots, and mushrooms that have been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine to help improve our resistance to stress, our concentration, and our immune system. They are called “adaptogens” because they “adapt” to the state of the body and can stimulate or calm it according to its needs.

Among the most well-known adaptogens, we find ashwagandha, rhodiola, ginseng, maca, and reishi, but you certainly consume other adaptogens every day: for example, ginger and rosemary fall into the adaptogen category. Kombucha, now well-known in the West, is also related to adaptogens.

Each adaptogen has its properties, but they all share a common point: the ability to reduce the harmful effects of stress on the body. High levels of cortisol can lead to a variety of health problems, including anxiety, depression, weight gain, and heart disease, as well as premature aging of the skin due to significant cell oxidation.

However, it is important to keep in mind that adaptogens are not intended to cure specific diseases but rather to support overall health and reduce the effects of stress on the body.

What are the properties of adaptogens?

Adaptogens boast several beneficial properties for the body: stress regulation, improved cognitive functions, boosted energy and vitality, and strengthened immune system. They are often highly antioxidant as well.

Here are a few examples of well-known adaptogens and their benefits:

Ashwagandha, also known as Indian ginseng, is used to improve concentration and reduce anxiety.

Rhodiola helps enhance cognitive and physical performance and reduces fatigue.

Ginseng improves energy and vitality.

Maca is recognized for its benefits on libido and energy.

Reishi, also known as the mushroom of immortality, is used to strengthen the immune system and reduce inflammation in the body.

What are the benefits of adaptogens in cosmetics?

In cosmetics, adaptogens help protect the skin against the harmful effects of the environment, reduce inflammation, and improve skin elasticity. Adaptogens also have moisturizing, antioxidant, and regenerative properties.

For example, ashwagandha is rich in antioxidants that can help reduce the damages caused by free radicals and prevent signs of skin aging. Rhodiola can help reduce skin inflammation and protect against the negative effects of UV rays, on a cellular level. Ginseng is a popular ingredient in pro-aging skincare products as it helps stimulate collagen production and improve skin elasticity.

Adaptogens can also soothe the skin and reduce irritations. Reishi mushroom, for instance, has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, which help relieve redness and skin irritations.
